Nine troupes join circus festival

The third International Circus Festival will kick off at Hanoi’s Central Circus Theatre on August 6.

The festival will gather circus performers from Vietnam and eight other countries including Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Mongolia, China, Laos, Cambodia and Cuba.

The purpose of the festival is aimed at advertising Vietnamese circus arts to foreign partners, and enhancing cooperative cultural and artistic relations between Vietnam and the other countries.

This is a chance for Vietnamese artists to learn about world circus arts and to develop advanced circus performances in Vietnam that are full of national characters and meet growing public demands for enjoyable public demands for enjoyable entertainment, said Vuong Duy Bien, vice director of the Performing Arts Department.

International performances will include Acrobatics by two Mongolian artists who won the silver medal at the Monte Carlo International Circus Festival in 2007, and Superman by Ukraine’s Ikalchyk. The Superman performance won the Special Prize in Dubai earlier this year.

The scheduled Vietnamese performances are artistic and follow typical Vietnamese characteristics, including Du Xuan (Spring Stroll) by artist Lan Huong and Prestidigitation by artist Quang Tho. The performances will be accompanied by traditional tuong (classical theatre) musicians.

The five-member jury board will include Gao Yue, director of the International Performing Arts Festival Agency in China, President of American Firebird Productions, Peter Dubinsky, Genish Matabosch, artistic director and executive producer of the International Circus Festival City of Albacete, Spain, and Vu Ngoan Hop, director of the Vietnam Circus Federation.

The organising board will award gold, silver and bronze cups, and certificates to the winning artists. The most excellent performances will be selected to take part in the final gala programme.
